Njállavárri

Njállavárri is a fell located near the village of Nuorgam, offering stunning views over the Teno River Valley and across the border into Norway. It is a summer destination accessible via a walking road. The road starts from Nuorgamintie (regional road 970) at a spot with space for a few cars at a roadside pull-off (address: Nuorgamintie 3002, coordinates: N70°03’24.4″, E27°34’03.4″). Larger parking areas can be found at Nivajoki, near the beginning of Museotie (address: Alakönkääntie 13).

The landscape is open fell terrain, typical of the region’s tundra-like environment, with dwarf shrubs and other vegetation, as well as fell wildlife. Reaching the summit of Njállavárri requires a good basic fitness level, some experience moving in natural terrain, and attention to weather conditions. Be sure to bring enough warm clothing, food, water, and a fully charged phone. The round trip from the road’s start to the summit and back is just over six kilometers.

There are many reindeer in the area. Please do not approach or disturb them under any circumstances. There is a reindeer fence gate along the road leading to the fell; please ensure it is closed carefully after passing through. Stay on the road at all times to help prevent wear and tear on the landscape. Although Njállavárri is a summer destination, ice may accumulate on the mast located at the summit even in spring and autumn. For this reason, avoid getting close to the mast. Note that there are no designated campfire sites in the area—please do not light fires in the wild. Take all your trash with you. There are no shelters or other facilities for hikers at the destination.
