Enjoy yourself in Nuorgam – the village of happy people
In the northernmost village of Finland and the northernmost point of the European Union lives a small community of people who make their living from nature, tourism, and cross-border trade. In Nuorgam, you’ll also find shops selling reindeer meat.
If your soul longs to roam, the surroundings of Nuorgam offer incredible conditions for hiking. You can explore the area around Lake Pulmanki—formed from an ancient Arctic Ocean fjord—either on your own or on guided tours offered year-round by local travel companies. The region is ideal for birdwatching and observing unique plant life. From Nuorgam, tours are also organized to the Varangerfjord in Norway, even by snowmobile.
The Teno River is an ancient route, used as an administrative and trade road as early as the 16th century. A path was formed along the riverbank to bypass the Alaköngäs rapids and transport larger cargo loads. Today, this bypass route is a museum road, offering impressive views over the Teno River.
Along the road to Lake Pulmanki, about a kilometer from the village, the Skaidijärvi Trail leads to Nuorgam’s most stunning viewpoint: Isokivenvaara. At Isokivenvaara, a resting stone has long served as a spot to pause when climbing from the village to the fell. Along the roadside, you’ll also find a stone-built environmental artwork depicting a riverboat—called “Nuorgamiin menijä” (the one going to Nuorgam).
In winter, you can ski across the mountaintops, breathe the clean air of Sápmi, and enjoy the profound silence of nature, with views stretching hundreds of kilometers.
We’re slowing down. The autumn colors are fading; it’s late autumn now. Nature is preparing for rest, the days are growing shorter, light frosts arrive, and the northern lights dazzle across the sky! There are still remnants of fall colors on the fells, drawing hikers into the serene silence even into October.
Norway is right next door—take day trips to various destinations and experience the breathtaking landscapes of the Arctic Ocean. At your lodging, enjoy a glass of something warm in an outdoor hot tub by the Teno River. Time moves toward the polar night and even more stunning displays of the northern lights. Once the snow arrives, you can snowshoe into the fells or take a snowmobile ride—even in a sled.
Take time for yourself—come and slow down in Nuorgam!
