Ice climbing in Utsjoki

The Kenespahta Ice Organ offers a beautiful and sheltered destination for ice climbers. The approximately 150 m high mountain wall is vertical at its lower part. A small stream flowing on top of the Pahta drains its water along the wall, which freezes into magnificent “ice organs” during the winter frosts. The best time to go ice climbing is in early winter: the ice mass is at its largest, the weather is favorable and there is plenty of light.

This work of art, shaped by nature, is located near the starting point of the Kevo route, approximately 26 km from Utsjoki in the direction of Inari. Kenespahta can be seen from behind Kenesjärvi on the four-way road from a distance of approximately half a kilometer. There are currently no companies in Utsjoki that offer ice climbing training or rent equipment suitable for the sport. Enthusiasts can reach the ice wall by snowshoeing or skiing.
