In the Kevo Strict Nature Reserve, located on the fell highlands of Utsjoki, you’ll find Lapland’s nature at its most rugged. The core of the nature reserve is a canyon-like gorge valley over 40 kilometers long and nearly 80 meters deep in places, with the Kevojoki River flowing at its bottom.
A scenically stunning hiking trail runs through the nature reserve, sometimes winding along the bottom of the canyon, other times across the highland, and crossing the Kevojoki River three times. The trail runs in many places close to the edge of the cliff, along steep rock faces or up and down steep stairs. Along the route are the nature reserve’s most spectacular sights: the Fiellu Waterfall and the Kevon Wall, where the gorge valley opens up into view.
The trail is very demanding, as it descends several times to the bottom of the canyon and climbs back up to the open fell. In some sections, the terrain is challenging. The trail is marked with orange paint markings and orange posts.
There are two alternative routes in the Kevo Strict Nature Reserve: the Guivi Trail (approx. 83 km) and the Kevo Trail (58 km).
The Guivi Trail is open for hiking in snow-free conditions from May 1st to October 15th.
The Kevo Trail can be used during snow-free conditions from June 15th to October 15th.
