Välimaa Sámi Farm

Jeagelveaji sámedállu - old Sámi farm by the River Teno

Välimaan saamelaistila / Jeagelveaji sámedállu

Välimaa Sámi Farm was built in 1866 on ancient fishing grounds by the River Teno. It’s an unique historical sight and an interesting piece of Sámi history. The timber and turf buildings of the old Sámi homestead are still in place as well as the valuable heritage environment of the farmyard, still upkept by grazing sheep every summer.

People on the farm fished and tended sheep in this magnificent setting until the 1970’s. Today, the farmyard is a relic of the old way of life in the rugged but beautiful natural setting of the extreme north of Finland.

The Välimaa Sámi Farm is open to visitors free of charge year round. However, there’s no winter maintenance, meaning that a visit during winter might need walking in deep snow. For further information about the Välimaa River Sámi Farm see here. The farm makes a perfect stop for your biking trip from Utsjoki to Nuorgam

The Välimaa River Sámi Farm is a fixed relic site, which may not be excavated, covered or damaged in any way under the Antiquities Act. Campfires  and camping are also prohibited. Please don’t leave any trash behind and respect the privacy of both, sheep and the shepherds.
