A History Through Time
Among the hills of Utsjoki lies the 14 km long Time Travel Trail. Along this hike are 18 information boards to walk you through 13.8 billion years of cosmic evolution. Every meter walked equals one million years; every kilometer equals one billion years. A human lifespan, which tends to be under a hundred years, covers less than one tenth of a millimeter.
As the trail goes up and down the fells and you’ll need to cross a stream, it’s quite demanding. However, you don’t need to walk the whole trail in one day – this way it’ll be easier and you can take your time traveling through time. The weather may change quickly up at the fells, so please remember to take warm clothes with you as well as something to eat and drink. Water proof, sturdy shoes and jacket are also recommended.
Please keep on the marked trail. Only make bonfire at the marked places and leave no trace of your visit. Please check the forest fire warning beforehand, as making an open fire is strictly prohibited while there’s a fire warning. If you see any reindeer or wild animals don’t approach them.
Visitors may use the path on their own or they can ask for a guided walk for more insights on the nature, the science and the history of the trail.
