The River Áhkojohka and Áhkojohka Waterfall

Áhkojohka waterfall is one of the most scenic day hike destinations of Utsjoki area. The path to the waterfall follows Áhkojohka river, surrounded by beautiful forest and fells.

We recommend visiting Áhkojohka waterfall with a local guide. The path is not very demanding, but as it takes you to Paistunturi Wilderness area and is not marked, it’s easy to get lost on the way. There are also some streams to be crossed on the way. The path to the waterfall and back is around 11 kilometres (7 miles).

Remember to take warm clothes, something to eat and drink and waterproof shoes with you. If going without a guide, we also recommend a compass and a map. The parking spot can be found in Tenontie 7793, 99950 Utsjoki. If that’s full, there’s another parking area just a few hundreds of metres towards Karigasniemi, on the side of the road. If you meet reindeer or any other animals please keep your distance. Please keep to the path.

If you decide to climb up the sides of the waterfall remember that this is at your own risk. The rocks can be very slippery and falling might be fatal.
